Does Your Home Need Insulation?

October 10, 2019

October is a wonderful month. Filled with the first signs of Autumn and unfortunately, the signs that the winter is on its way. Take advantage of the last few days of fall weather and install insulation in your home. Insulation is important for a large variety of reasons. It keeps home cool in summer and warm in the winter. This allows for your energy bill to be lower in the long term. Why wouldn’t you want to enjoy all of the comforts that a properly insulated home can provide?

When trying to establish if your home is in need of insulation, the first step is with a proper inspection. Older homes will not have the same level of insulation and have a higher chance of benefitting from insulation. In the process of purchasing a home, you should have an idea around the level of insulation that exists from the energy audit. If not, an energy assessment can help to identify areas in your home that are under-insulated. Beyond, paying someone to examine your home there are other more noticeable signs.

If you have noticed any of the below in your home, then your home is in need of insulation.

Varying Temperatures- The most common sign that a home isn’t well insulated are huge differences in the temperature of each room. When one room is very cold while others seem to have a moderate temperature, this isn’t good. A properly insulated home will regulate the temperature throughout each room.

Too High Energy Bills- This is the biggest financial sign of a lack of insulation. If you notice that your heating bill is only increasing with each winter and that your home doesn’t feel warmer with the increase, then rest assured your insulation isn’t doing its job.

Cold Walls, Ceilings, and Floors- The surfaces in your home shouldn’t be too cold to the touch. While these areas will never feel as warm as resting under the covers in your bed there is a point when they are too cold. An easy solution for cold floors is purchasing warm socks but the simple solution could only be delaying a more honest truth. That it’s time for your insulation to be replaced.

New Furry Friends- Have you noticed an increase in mice, rodents, and/or other insects in your home? Sadly, these are signs of poor insulation. These new guests are making their way into your home through tiny cracks and crevices that are essentially signs of bad insulation. Unfortunately, even if your home is properly insulated, having an infestation is also a sign that your insulation may need to be replaced. This is because they can lay eggs and leave waste behind in the insulation. So proper insulation is also a good way of protecting your home against rodent and insect infestations.

Leaks in the Attic- Sometimes insulation isn’t about what it’s letting out (mainly heat) but also what it’s letting in. In this instance, we’re talking about water. A leaky roof is a sign that proper insulation is needed. Water damage can create a large variety of costly problems down the road, including mould and other home damage. Once noticed, repair any damage caused by the leaks and consider replacing the insulation.

Autumn is a wonderful season. Not only does it provide crisp days perfect for shopping and nights out, but it’s the perfect time to replace your insulation. Why wait until the winter to fix the problem.
